Cristosal Demands Transparency from Bukele's Government on Bitcoin Donations
Cristosal, a human rights organization, has demanded greater transparency from the government of El Salvador regarding the private bitcoin (BTC) donations received by the state. This demand arises after a report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicated that the increase in the country's bitcoin reserves is solely due to private contributions. Cristosal warned about regulatory gaps and risks associated with the lack of clarity in the receipt of these funds. The NGO requests the publication of the donors' identities, the amounts transferred, and the agreements supporting the donations. It also urges compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Asset Law. The report highlights the need for a forensic analysis of the blockchain to ensure that the funds do not come from illicit activities. Cristosal points out the risk that private donations may be offered in exchange for government contracts, which could constitute transnational bribery. Despite delays in the financing program reviews, the IMF supported the government's version regarding the origin of the donations. However, one day after this announcement, authorities confirmed a new acquisition of bitcoin. As of October 12, 2026, El Salvador's state wallet records 7,802 BTC, accumulating 1 BTC daily.
