Self-Regulation Framework for AI Supported by the US, Without Binding Obligations

By: cryptonomist.ch|10/20/2026 12:29:06

Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google propose a self-regulation framework for AI that entrusts safety coordination to companies, with the support of the US administration. The proposal does not impose binding obligations on the sector. The initiative aims to oversee the technology of companies and manage its societal impacts without direct government intervention. It focuses on the independent coordination of safety standards among AI companies rather than common and mandatory rules. The government and industry have distinct roles: the US administration supports the effort, while companies lead the self-governance framework. This proposal follows a voluntary agreement from September 2026, which required stronger internal controls and better risk management for companies developing frontier AI models. The new initiative shifts the focus to the independent coordination of standards, differing from a framework that establishes applicable requirements across the sector. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are participating in an industry-led governance initiative aimed at coordinated oversight, but the structure remains non-binding.
