Swedish Government Office Bans ChatGPT and Claude, Retains Microsoft Copilot
The Swedish Government Office announced that starting from October 26, it will ban ChatGPT and Claude on employees' computers, approving only Microsoft Copilot as the sole AI tool that has passed security review, and requiring civil servants to switch to using Copilot. Digital Director Mikael Wettercrantz stated that the use of AI services without formal contracts could have consequences for information security, as multiple cases of improper use of open AI services have been identified, involving the handling of sensitive information and AI-generated content. Due to the lack of formal agreements, consumer-grade AI tools send user queries to external company servers, and U.S. laws allow authorities to request these companies to hand over data. Copilot was retained because the Government Office enhanced its security settings after review, while ChatGPT and Claude were not treated equally. Some employees can still access the two banned tools through an internally built AI platform. Previously, the Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Health and Welfare had implemented similar bans, and the law enforcement agency is also about to make a decision; an internal audit by the Transport Agency found about 10 AI services being used widely and at high risk.
