Robinhood Sees Over 150,000 Users Open AI Trading Accounts, CEO Envisions Retail Strategies Close to Exchanges
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated in an interview that future retail trading will be initiated by AI. The AI Agent can monitor the market around the clock, handling trades in stocks, options, and cryptocurrencies, although most funds may still be held long-term. In May of this year, Robinhood allowed users to access third-party AI Agents through MCP, and at the end of September, announced the direct integration of Agents into the app, with over 150,000 customers opening dedicated trading accounts. Currently, funds are restricted to independent accounts; the Agent can view users' other account information but can only place orders within the dedicated account, with funds needing to be actively transferred by the user. Tenev mentioned that technically connecting to the main account is not difficult, but the company has chosen to gradually loosen permissions. The built-in Agent requires users to approve each transaction by default, although this setting can be manually turned off; external Agents accessed through MCP do not require transaction-by-transaction approval by default, and users must enable approval themselves. Tenev envisions allowing retail investors to deploy trading strategies on servers close to exchanges to reduce order latency, enabling ordinary investors to use such infrastructure without needing to understand data centers and network engineering. Robinhood has not yet provided this service and has not announced a timeline for its launch.
