Stock tokens prioritized over on-chain fees: The roadmap behind Robinhood's ecosystem tokens.

Robinhood announced its Q3 earnings: revenue and earnings per share slightly missed expectations, with the stock price dropping over 8% within a day after the earnings call.

However, compared to the earnings themselves, the crypto industry is more focused on what was said during the call. After Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated that the company would significantly increase investment in Robinhood Chain, ecosystem tokens like Pons, AI, and Orbio surged by about 10% to 30%.

This surge was directly ignited by Vlad's comments. He acknowledged that the ecological growth surrounding Robinhood Chain and its wallet exceeded the company's expectations; developers have also consistently reported insufficient support. He clearly stated that Robinhood would form new teams and increase investment. The market interpreted this as Robinhood directly supporting on-chain native projects.

However, upon reviewing the entire earnings call, it becomes evident that what Robinhood hopes to cultivate on this chain is misaligned with the leading ecosystem tokens. Below, we outline the priorities revealed during the call and contrast them with market expectations for ecosystem tokens.

True Priorities Revealed in the Earnings Call

Stock token TVL prioritized over on-chain transaction fees

Vlad stated that he does not want to build a business that relies on high fees from on-chain activities and considers stock token TVL as a metric for assessing the chain's long-term sustainability. In his view, the advantage of Robinhood Chain lies in RWA. CFO Shiv Verma added that the gross on-chain fees for Q3 were approximately $50 million, with a net of about $25 million. However, he emphasized that the chain team's goal is not revenue, but rather the growth of TVL, developers, and stock tokens.

These remarks provide context for the fee surge in September. 100y pointed out in a previous article that the daily network fees for Robinhood Chain peaked at around $8.27 million on September 4, dropping over 99% to just $30,000 to $40,000 by mid-October; during the same period, spot trading volume remained above $600 million to $700 million daily. Since the chain is built on Arbitrum, the fee rate depends on the level of congestion in the block space. After the congestion caused by the meme issuance wave subsided, fees fell accordingly. Robinhood also proactively raised the gas limit and increased throughput, further lowering fees. Thus, it appears that the fee income generated by the meme craze is seen by Robinhood more as a drag on user experience rather than a sustainable revenue source.

Applications need to go beyond launchpads

Vlad mentioned that the current on-chain applications are relatively simple, such as launchpads and liquidity pools. The next phase is to make stock tokens programmable like software, thereby giving rise to products like tokenized options contracts that do not currently exist. Robinhood's own roadmap points in the same direction: to bring as many tradable assets as possible in the U.S. market onto the chain for international clients, providing them as foundational components for developers to combine. Daily trading volume for DeFi perpetual contracts has already exceeded $1 billion and is also listed as an achievement; among them, Lighter and Arcus lead in this field, both of which are protocols that Robinhood has strategically invested in.

In other words, a more reasonable interpretation is that Vlad's promised developer support is not aimed at expanding the current launchpad ecosystem, but rather at encouraging more complex financial applications based on stock tokens.

U.S. customers remain a gap

The biggest limitation of Robinhood Chain is that stock tokens cannot be used in the U.S., which is precisely Robinhood's core customer base. Currently, Robinhood app users account for only 1% to 2% of all transactions on the chain. The main product available to U.S. customers is essentially Earn, used for depositing USDG; the underlying Steakhouse USDG vault holds about $540 million, close to half of the chain's TVL. Vlad welcomed the SEC's recent announcement of an innovation exemption but stated that long-term certainty still requires rule-making or legislation. He also mentioned that the company would soon disclose more U.S. tokenization plans.

Which projects align more closely with Robinhood's direction

However, it is difficult to assert that Robinhood wants to distance itself from the meme ecosystem. At least for now, meme coins remain the most effective way to create demand for stock tokens. Blockworks previously pointed out that the trading volume of LONG is highly correlated with stock token TVL, with a correlation of 0.86. In other words, the RWA metric still relies on meme trading.

From this perspective, if Robinhood supports the meme ecosystem, it is more likely not for chain fees but to increase the issuance and circulation of stock tokens. However, I question whether Robinhood is willing to let this model persist long-term. Even if meme coins are currently the most effective source of demand, Robinhood has made the healthy growth of stock token TVL a key metric. In the long run, it is more likely to seek to broaden the use of stock tokens, making them independent of meme trading.

If so, Robinhood's support for different ecosystem projects will vary. Projects that directly use stock tokens as collateral, margin, or underlying assets are more likely to receive support, regardless of meme activities.

Lighter

Robinhood strategically invested in Lighter and completed integration when Robinhood Chain went live, allowing users to trade directly within the Robinhood Wallet. Since July, Lighter has accepted stock tokens on Robinhood Chain as collateral for perpetual contracts. This is a pioneering case of a more advanced use of stock tokens and aligns with Robinhood's goals. Lighter recently stated in an investor call that it plans to apply for a U.S. derivatives license in November. If approved, I believe it could become the largest channel for attracting U.S. users.

Priors

@priors_trade is an on-chain credit protocol that borrows USDG from AI agents and accepts stock tokens as collateral to increase credit limits. Robinhood Crypto publicly endorsed this project on the day of the earnings call. This project is not closely related to memes but does put stock tokens to use and shows what standards Robinhood uses to evaluate ecosystems. Robinhood is positioning agency trading as one of the key growth drivers for the app; projects that allow agents to use stock tokens directly may become a connection point between the app's agency strategy and the chain.

Standard Reserve

Shortly after the earnings call, 0xBeans referenced Vlad's question about "what stock tokens can do when they are programmable like software" and published a white paper under the name @standard_rsv, proposing the Isolated Exposure Token (IET). This design leverages the overnight effect: the long-term returns of U.S. stocks mostly come from the price changes between the market close and the next market open. It splits a stock token into $$OVERNIGHT$$SESSION: the former captures price changes from close to open, while the latter captures changes from open to close. The two tokens can be merged at any time to redeem the original stock token, with the merge price thus anchored to the stock price. Each token initially has about 2x leverage exposure, without involving borrowing or liquidation. The structure is akin to separating principal and yield in Pendle, applied to trading periods. It only exists when 24-hour trading tokens coexist with the underlying stock, and the underlying stock has official opening and closing times. Therefore, although it is still a white paper, it is a good example of advanced applications that can only be realized with stock tokens.

What about existing launchpads?

In contrast, projects whose value mainly depends on speculative token launch fees tell a different story. Taking Pons as an example, it uses launchpad fees for buybacks and burns, with its value ultimately depending on how many speculative trades continue to go through the launchpad. This is not closely related to the goals set by management during the earnings call. I also do not believe Robinhood has much reason to specifically promote this project or protect this source of fees. Of course, if Pons finds new ways to increase the demand for stock token issuance and usage, the situation may change. Notably, $PRIORS is also issued through Pons. Whether Pons can become a starting point for projects using stock tokens will be a useful clue to observe this possibility.

Conclusion

After the earnings call, the rise of Robinhood's ecosystem tokens seems to reflect a simple fact: Robinhood will invest more resources into the chain. However, a closer look at the call reveals that the targets of these resources are quite specific: healthy growth of stock token TVL, financial applications that go beyond launchpads, and the introduction of U.S. users. The focus is not on the meme trading that previously led to a surge in fees.

I believe Robinhood will not abandon the meme ecosystem. However, looking ahead, it is more likely to treat this ecosystem as a foundational stage rather than the center; the effort will focus on nurturing more advanced financial applications and expanding the use of stock tokens in perpetual and options projects.
