Blockchain Association Urges Congress For Crypto Tax Reforms
The Blockchain Association has requested bipartisan support from congressional leaders for new crypto tax legislation, including a de minimis exemption for small transactions and revised tax treatment for stablecoins and staking rewards. A letter was sent to key lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, alongside the launch of a website to facilitate communication between digital-asset users and lawmakers. The association advocates for a de minimis exemption that would prevent low-value crypto transactions from triggering complex tax calculations. It also proposes treating qualifying stablecoins similarly to cash for tax purposes. Additionally, the group seeks a framework for mining and staking rewards to be taxed upon disposition rather than at receipt. These proposals are not yet adopted changes but represent the association's policy requests. The association highlights that 67 million Americans engage with digital assets, emphasizing that small tax frictions can disproportionately impact taxpayers. Lawmakers must weigh the revenue implications of these exemptions and the potential for tax avoidance. The association's campaign aims to simplify crypto transactions while ensuring clarity for users and the IRS.
