Binance and Coinbase Participate in West Africa Anti-Fraud Operation, Identifying Over $11 Million in Funds to be Frozen
In a joint operation against West African fraud networks, law enforcement agencies in Ghana and Nigeria arrested 28 individuals involved in crimes such as cryptocurrency investment scams. The operation, led by the UK's National Crime Agency, involved Binance, Coinbase, and blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis, Elliptic, and TRM Labs. Private sector partners identified over $11 million in potentially frozen funds, although this amount has not yet been confirmed as recovered. Coinbase assisted in tracking illicit funds, supporting asset freezes, and providing intelligence to investigators, identifying over 65 victims still being scammed, helping to prevent potential losses of over $415,000. During the operation, Ghanaian police arrested 19 individuals and seized 303 electronic devices, while Nigeria arrested 9. Additionally, 117 victims of human trafficking in Ghana are awaiting repatriation to Nigeria, and the participating parties provided law enforcement with leads on more than 30 suspected fraud centers. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that this is the first joint operation specifically targeting the West African region.
