Bill Gates Claims AI Will Trigger 20 Years of Turmoil
In the "Decoder" podcast, Bill Gates stated that artificial intelligence will create genuine wealth, but the next 20 years will experience unprecedented turmoil, leading to job losses and chaos. He pointed out that positions such as telemarketing, customer service, and accounting will disappear, and blue-collar jobs will be taken over by humanoid robots. If not significantly slowed down or stopped, robots capable of building houses, growing food, and performing surgeries will emerge, making human labor unnecessary for most goods and services. Gates believes that work provides a sense of purpose, income, reasons to show up, relationships with colleagues, and pathways for creativity and problem-solving, while activities like art, sports, cooking, and parenting will remain for humans. The report mentioned that Jeff Bezos and Jamie Dimon have proposed reducing weekly working hours, while Elon Musk predicted a bumpy transition and advocated for the government to issue checks to everyone. Dario Amodi stated that AI is expected to improve quality of life, but the scale of short-term impacts will be unprecedented. Despite concerns about AI replacing jobs and high-profile layoffs at companies like Amazon and Meta, the national unemployment rate has not significantly risen during the AI boom.
