Anthropic CEO Responds to AI Safety Concerns, Emphasizes Importance of Technological Leadership
Anthropic's draft AI safety bill submitted to U.S. lawmakers has faced scrutiny. The bill sets high thresholds for the government to urgently halt dangerous models, requiring risks to involve biological weapons, cyberattacks, or AI going out of control, potentially resulting in over 50 deaths or serious injuries, or losses exceeding $1 billion. Some provisions may limit state regulatory authority. Nathan Calvin, head of strategy at AI safety organization Encode AI, pointed out that Anthropic modified its originally strict safety policies in February this year, removing the requirement to independently halt research at higher risk stages, citing that competitors might take advantage of the situation. During the same period, Anthropic invested heavily in computing power, formed a chip team, and assigned more AI research tasks to Claude. On October 21, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei posted on X to refute the criticisms, acknowledging that the company had made mistakes but insisting that the pursuit of cutting-edge AI capabilities did not contradict its safety mission. He emphasized that only by staying at the forefront of technology can the industry improve safety standards. He listed nine safety decisions that had previously cost the company commercially, including restricting the open access to Mythos-level models for several months and strictly limiting biology-related requests. The safety roadmap updated by the company on October 19 states that existing policies mainly target the deployment of dangerous models, and in the future, there may be a need to directly limit the speed of research and development, with plans to propose relevant policy options by January 15, 2027, or explain why no proposals were made.
