Michael Saylor Sparks Debate with '110 Reasons' Why BIP-110 is a Bad Idea
Michael Saylor, the CEO of MicroStrategy, elaborated on his "110 reasons" for why the proposal for a temporary fork to limit non-monetary transactions on the Bitcoin network (or BIP-110) is a bad idea on social media this Sunday.
According to Mihan Blockchain, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (BIP-110) was introduced in December 2025 with the aim of preventing the network from being spammed by inscriptions similar to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other arbitrary data, while also preserving Bitcoin's primary use as a peer-to-peer cash system.
The man who controls the largest corporate Bitcoin (BTC) treasury defended what he described as "neutral rules, strict consensus, free markets, and permissionless innovation" in a nearly 3,700-word post on X.com.
Saylor stated:
Many Bitcoiners I respect support BIP-110. They want to keep validation accessible, protect node operators from costs and unwanted content, maintain affordable payments, and focus Bitcoin on sound money rather than storing public data. These are serious concerns. I agree with these goals, but I disagree with the proposed solution.
He added:
This article critiques the proposal itself, not the individuals behind it. I assume good faith. Bitcoin is at its strongest when we can vehemently disagree with one another without mistaking allies for enemies.
By noon on Sunday, the post had been viewed 879,000 times and received 692 replies and 852 retweets.
The BIP-110 proposal is one of the most significant protocol-level disputes in the Bitcoin developer community since the "Blocksize Wars" between 2015 and 2017, when ecosystem participants debated whether it was worth risking a chain split to increase the block size limit for scalability.
This proposal was introduced by an anonymous Bitcoin developer named Dathon Ohm and supported by Ocean protocol founder Luke Dashjr. Among the opponents of this plan is Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream.
Uncertainty Surrounding BIP-110 Approval
To clarify, BIP-110 will not be activated unless 55% of the Bitcoin nodes validating blocks support this proposal during a "period" of Bitcoin blocks.
In the previous period (i.e., period number 475 between blocks 955,584 and 957,599), only 1% of the blocks were in favor of this plan.
This controversy arises at a time when ordinal activity is nearly at its historical low, with less than 10,000 ordinals registered daily on the Bitcoin blockchain over the past month. This figure represents a significant decrease from its peak of over 400,000 daily registrations in August 2023.
Adam Back has previously criticized BIP-110, describing it as "an attempt to police others." He stated that Bitcoin's decentralization should mean that "you cannot impose your views on others" and deemed this proposal incompatible with the cypherpunk spirit of Bitcoin, which advocates for permissionless and censorship-resistant money.
In contrast, Dashjr and other BIP-110 supporters have called the high volume of data from ordinals a "serious threat" to the network that necessitates immediate reform.
They have also argued that contrary to the fears of many, BIP-110 will not lead to a chain split. They added that the BIP-110 fork imposes a temporary one-year limit, thus not invalidating fee-paying transactions in the long run.
