Discussion on Tax Deferral and System Improvement for Digital Assets to be Held on the 30th
A discussion on the additional deferral of income tax on digital assets and measures for system improvement will be held at the National Assembly on the 30th at 9:30 AM. The event is hosted by Democratic Party lawmaker Min Byung-deok and co-organized by the Tax Finance Newspaper and the law firm Bae, Kim & Lee. The discussion will address key issues regarding digital asset taxation and the direction for system reform. The presentation will be led by Choi Hee-kyung, a specialist from Bae, Kim & Lee's Financial Group, followed by a panel discussion with experts. Kang Seong-hoo, president of the Korea Digital Asset Industry Association, is expected to emphasize the need for legislation at the level of the stock market. Additionally, discussions on overseas taxation systems and taxpayer rights will also take place. The taxation of digital asset income was introduced with the amendment of the Income Tax Act in 2020, but its implementation has been postponed three times, now scheduled for January 1, 2027. Recently, both ruling and opposition parties have proposed legislation to delay the implementation until 2029, and the Blue House is also considering an additional deferral. This discussion is anticipated to explore the necessity of tax deferral and institutional challenges.
