Circle's Refusal to Assist Law Enforcement in Recovering Stolen Funds Sparks Prosecutorial Discontent

Wisconsin and New York state prosecutors have expressed dissatisfaction with stablecoin issuer Circle for repeatedly obstructing law enforcement's attempts to recover stolen funds. Law enforcement agencies had requested that Circle assist victims of fraud and hacking incidents by destroying and reissuing USDC tokens, but Circle declined these requests based on its policy stance. Circle believes that altering the blockchain ledger to reverse transactions would undermine the fundamental properties of the USDC stablecoin and set a dangerous precedent for the entire cryptocurrency industry. This position highlights the deep conflict between the immutability of blockchain and the needs of law enforcement. Prosecutors argue that Circle, as a regulated stablecoin issuer, should bear greater social responsibility, while Circle insists on upholding the core principles of blockchain technology, making it difficult for both sides to reconcile their differences in the short term.
