Chinese Brands Capture 34% of the Hybrid Car Market in Europe

In June, Chinese automotive brands accounted for 34% of sales of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Europe. Companies BYD and Chery Automobile achieved record market shares in this segment. The sales growth is attributed to expectations of potential restrictions from the European Union, as high anti-subsidy tariffs apply only to fully electric vehicles from China. Analyst Julian Litzinger noted that Chinese automakers are counting on deep market integration by the time tariffs are introduced. European buyers are opting for Chinese hybrids due to high prices of electric vehicles and insufficient charging infrastructure. In the UK, the Chery Jaecoo 7 SUV became a bestseller in March. European giants like Volkswagen are losing market shares, with exports of German cars to China dropping by more than a quarter to €4.7 billion. In June, Chinese brands accounted for 11% of all new car sales in Europe, 15% of the electric vehicle market, and nearly 25% of all hybrids. In May, the share of new Chinese cars in the European market reached 11% for the first time. In Ukraine, nearly 17,000 new and used hybrid cars were purchased in the second quarter of 2026. The share of hybrids among new passenger cars increased from 24.3% in January to 33.4% in April 2026, while the share of electric vehicles decreased from 18% to 8.9%.
